Fraction words

Equivalent fractions

Fractions that name the same amount, such as 1/2, 2/4 and 4/8. They share one point on the number line.

Split each half of a bar into two equal pieces and 1/2 becomes 2/4: there are twice as many pieces, each half the size, and the shaded amount stays exactly the same.

Multiplying the top and bottom of a fraction by the same number (or dividing both by the same number) always gives an equivalent fraction.

One of two parts and two of four parts cover exactly the same length.
