Fraction words

Unit fraction

A fraction with 1 on top, such as 1/2, 1/3 or 1/8. It is one equal part of the whole.

Unit fractions are the building blocks of all fractions: 3/4 is three copies of 1/4, and 7/4 is seven copies of 1/4.

For unit fractions of the same whole, a bigger denominator means a smaller piece, so 1/8 < 1/6 < 1/4 < 1/2.

One part out of eight equal parts is the unit fraction 1/8.
