Fraction words

Equal parts

Parts that are exactly the same size. A fraction only makes sense when the whole is split into equal parts.

Four pieces are only fourths if all four pieces are the same size. If a rectangle is cut into four strips of different widths, none of them is one fourth.

Equal parts do not need to be the same shape. A square can be cut into two small rectangles and two triangles that each cover exactly one fourth of it.

These four parts have different shapes but the same area, so each one is 1/4 of the square.
