Fraction words

Whole

The one complete thing, length or group that a fraction is a part of.

A fraction always describes a part of a whole. One half of a large pizza is more pizza than one half of a small pizza, because the wholes are different sizes.

On a number line, the whole is the distance from 0 to 1. When we compare fractions, we compare parts of the same whole.

Both pizzas are cut in half, but the larger whole has the larger half.
