Fraction words

Improper fraction

A fraction whose top number is equal to or bigger than its bottom number, such as 6/4 or 5/5. It is worth one whole or more.

There is nothing improper about these fractions: they name amounts of one whole or more. 6/4 means six fourths, which is one whole (four fourths) and two more fourths.

Improper fractions sit at or beyond 1 on the number line. 7/4 is three fourths of the way from 1 to 2.

Six fourth-sized pieces fill one whole and half of another.
